Another in the series of eight pieces based on
Jesus' statements of identity in John's Gospel and Revelation
- alluding to the name and nature of the Godhead, the Great
'I AM' (see also I AM the Resurrection
and the Life and I AM the
Bread of Life, and I AM the
Light of the World). Here two intertwining voices -
which may be solo voices, or many voices: women &men, or
upper voices & lower voices - represent the Son's unity
with the Father. The whole motet uses an unusual 7-note mode
(C, D, Eb, E, G, Bb, B) derived from the bell
chords at the end of the composer's first chamber opera, Anna's
Rapid Eye Movement.
I and the Father are one.
I AM the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the
Father, but by Me.
He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father.
Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in
Me?
And whatsoever ye shall ask in My Name, that will I do, that
the Father may be glorified in the Son. (John 10:30 & 14:6, 9-10, 13)
