piece
for double-choir based on the canonic motif above and a simple
plagal cadence - premiered by Jeremy Summerly and the Oxford
Camerata in 2001; recorded
by TONUS PEREGRINUS and released on Hyperion in June 2005 (CDA67507);
duration: c.10'00"
This piece is an attempt to explore the arching
melodic fragment pictured above (familiar as part of the so-called
English Cadence) on various temporal levels - ranging from the
overall structure of the piece to local decoration - and in
various directions - upside-down, back-to-front etc. The harmonic
world is very similar to that of Adoro
Te: each choir has a pair of chords a 4th/5th apart
(Db major, Ab major; eb minor, ab
minor) and a[n] historically-resonant mode of seven notes with
one additional note (like having a Bb to play with in
addition to the seven white notes of the piano). The text consists
of just one word:
Amen
